2013 July - Verantwortung - Social Spot // Production Design, Director, Producer

2013 July - Verantwortung - Social Spot // Production Design, Director, Producer

Right after the end of the Dark Matter Project I  had to produce my final movie on my academy. I only had 12 days left to finish the shootings, so the post-production has time to finish the rest of the movie.
The story is short: A guy wants to check-in a hotel. He walks through a corridor when he hears the noices of many TVs in the guest rooms. It's a mix out of Casting Shows, soft porns, commercials, etc. His reaction is a loug scream of madness.
It's a short criticism of the TV-Programm especially in Germany.

First I searched for a Hotel we could shoot in. After several denials I spoke with my flat mates and I renovated our redecorated our flat corridor into a classic Hotel. I took a dark green for the lower area which looks very harmonious. I added a stucco line to separate the green from the white part of the walls and the ceiling. On top I added some gold devices to the white walls. I dressed our bar to a reception desk by adding flyers, flowers and stuff you normally see in a hotel.

The result still satisfy me every day when I come home.

2013 August - The Last Show - Cinematic Music Video // Production Design

2013 August - The Last Show - Cinematic Music Video // Production Design

1980s, somewhere in the middle west... After a long break the Clowns of a small town reunite for one last show. But one thing is different: They are angry!
After just a few month I returned to the Filmakademie BW for the next project. Same director and same cinematographer as the last time. But after a story based in the space far away in the future, we're now in the USA 30 years ago. A great crew, splatter, a great location, splatter, clowns with weapons, splatter, more than 100 people on set and last but not least: more splatter.
We spend our time in a club near stuttgart. It has a big backyard which was an ideal base for our shooting.

I'll tell you more about the different locations as soon I have pictures of every one of them.
First a few first pics of our shooting, enjoy:

2013 June - Dark Matter - Commercial // Production Design

2013 June - Dark Matter - Commercial // Production Design

My first movie with people of the Filmakademie BW - the best film school in Germany. Also it was my first movie inside a green screen studio. It was a total new kind of work to match real life props with animated stuff out of Cinema 4D. I had to communicate a lot with the VFX guys. In the end we had a set which was nearly 95% digital. We reduced the real life things as much as possible to save money. Finally we ended with a puzzle which was replaced for every location.

And here a little photo of our studio with mo-cap-system.

I'm looking forward to show you pictures of the final digital set.

2013 May - Nero - Commercial // Production Design

2013 May - Nero - Commercial // Production Design

After a long pre-production time the Shootings for Nero began. It's a story based in the time of Nero, emperor of Rome. It tells a little different story of the great fire he started... this time by accident.

Although it's a commercial, it was still a low budget production. Therefore we needed a location which was easy and cheap to dress as Nero's palace. A big help was the fact, that the movie should look like an old Italian sword-and-sandal movie. We found an old Roman villa in the south of Germany. It was rebuild to show the life of the Romans in northern Europe. About 200 yards away from the main set, we found a little Germanic hut. Both sets were dressed as good as possible without looking like a high-end set. The light did the rest, so it looked like a studio setup back in the 70s. Props were the main problem on the set, because there are not so much stores for historical stuff in Germany. Massive use of Copper-spray, rough cloth and natural fire did fine to tell the story believable.

I don't have any material of the Shooting yet so I will upload something as soon as I have more to show. It's worth waiting.

2013 Restart

2013 January - Triggerplay - Short // Production Design

This is a movie about a guy who lived near Sarajevo as a child. The war began and he lost his parents. 20 years later (or so..) he lives in Germany but still suffers from the incidents. We had two main sets: a small hut in the hills near Sarajevo and the flat in Germany. Both locations were in Esslingen (near Stuttgart, D). The flat was totally empty and the hut was appointed in a typical german garden hut.

Specialty: We built the bathroom because the flat had none. The shower worked (can be seen on the movie ;) )

After Crew I made a total break with art department because I worked on different departments to learn about their needs... I grow up a little bit more and started again..

2010 - Crew - short // post-production // set constructor

Crew was my first movie with set construction and bigger logistics. Due to the fact we were shooting a film set. Some sets were used after they wrapped (Make-up for example). They worked...

2010 - What remains - short // production design

This was my first movie as production designer. I learned much about the responsibility on set. Most of it was on location shooting without much work in building sets. Small steps at first...

2009 - Sin Reaper 3D // property master, set constructor, SFX

Due to copyright I won't release any stills out of the movie. It was a great experience and my first step into the art department. The movie got released in Japan and the USA.

before 2009

While I was in school I worked at a small musical theatre where I helped building the stage set. I did 2 1/2 productions before I left because I had to finish school.
Hi guys, I'm Dennis Dembeck. I just started this blog to show you my work on different projects I was, am and will be involved. I'm at the beginning of my career as production designer after I just finished my training as a Designer for media, film and audiovision.

For me a blog is more useful than an own homepage, because my skills improve very fast and so you can see the progress much easier. In the beginning I will upload some stills from movies I worked on but after some time, there will be more and more projects I work on right when I post about it. I'm looking forward to see this site expanding.

Hope you'll enjoy my work and trust me on your own projects.
